The island of Timor gave rise to a peculiar mask tradition. According to records, masks were used by warriors to scare enemies during fights. They were also worn by men during a variety of ceremonies, such as harvest ceremonies and ceremonies for celebrations of victory in war. The masks ended up becoming a symbol placed inside the huts to protect the family from evil spirits.
